GPS and the internet do not work underground. Using UWB technology, MineGuard locates every worker in the mine tunnels to within about 10 centimetres and carries the data to the surface from board to board — without any internet connection.

Every miner carries a small battery-powered board (a tag), and fixed boards (anchors) are installed along the tunnels. The last anchor passes its data to the previous one, which passes it on again, so the information reaches the surface without internet. If a worker falls, stops moving or dangerous gas builds up, the team knows within seconds — and knows exactly where that person is.

Gas spreads along the galleries and weakens with distance; it passes between levels with difficulty and travels further when ventilation stops. Thresholds: CH₄ 1% warning / 1.5% alarm, CO 25 / 50 ppm, O₂ 19.5% / 18%. During evacuation every worker is routed by the shortest path that avoids gassy tunnels to the main shaft, escape raise or refuge chamber. A worker motionless for 30 seconds triggers a “man-down” alarm.

In mining accidents, the biggest challenge for rescue teams is not knowing where trapped workers are. Underground there is no GPS, no mobile network and no internet. Gases such as methane and carbon monoxide are invisible and odourless; by the time they are noticed, it is often too late.
How it works

Locates
The tag on each miner talks to the surrounding anchors over UWB (ultra-wideband); its position is calculated to within about 10 cm.
- Step 2
Relays
Starting from the last anchor, data is passed from board to board until it reaches the surface. No internet required.
- Step 3
Rescues
CH₄, CO, H₂S and O₂ are measured continuously; it raises alarms, shows the evacuation route and sends a “Man-Down” alert after 30 seconds without movement.
